I spend a lot of time fighting the feeling that rock n’ roll from Japan is superior to rock n’ roll from everywhere else. After hearing Watusi Zombie, I officially decided to give up. I was worried that saying Japanese rock is better would come off as prejudiced and ignorant. Well, perhaps I’m ignorant, but I think I’m being pretty fucking objective here. Also, I know it’s cliché to be into Japanese shit, but maybe that’s because so much Japanese shit fucking rules balls. The amount of profanity I’m using alone should let you know how intensely I feel about Japanese rock n’ roll.
I would love to know exactly how it is that so many Japanese bands know how to rock so fucking hard. I’m sure there’s a lot of sociological explanations that are really far out, but I think it’s more likely that we’ll never be able to answer that question.
So anyway, Watusi Zombie is a mostly garage psychedelic type band that rocks hard and I love to death. I’m not sure that there’s anything more I need to say about them.
These guys are indeed great. I saw ‘em in a warehouse here in Santa Cruz like five years ago and they blew the lid off the place. Total energy!
