Archers of Loaf

Earlier today I decided I should try and write one post to Ve per day. There’s so much music out there, and if I don’t tackle it with dedication, I may never get around to writing about every single band ever to exist.

Archers of Loaf was a indie band that rode the grunge-era wave to achieve a loyal fanbase. Their music had a smart, sophisticated, intellectual feel to it. The band produced something more thought provoking and clean-cut, while wedged in the middle of rock-the-fuck-out Grunge and the sugar-coated garbage pop that ruled the airwaves of the early nineties almost as much as it has every other time in history. Perhaps a suitable comparison would be Dinosaur Jr.

The band is noted for their refusal to sign to Warner Brothers subsidiary Maverick Records. They noted that it would be expensive to break their current deal with Alias Records, and Maverick’s catalog of crappy top 40′s music wasn’t something Archers of Loaf wanted to be associated with.

They broke up because one of them got carpal tunnel syndrome. That’s probably as good a time to call it as any.
