My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult has always been one of those bands that I’ve heard people mention, but I never had any certain idea what they sounded like, except that I thought they came into fruition during the grunge era. They had a pretty cool name so I decided, what the heck, I’ll go ahead and get their whole discography and check them out.
I deleted all their MP3s after about four albums worth of music, and if I weren’t so forgiving I would have done it earlier. I like how the band sometimes takes goth rock in a smooth, mellow sort of direction, without loosing any of the gloomy subtext, but other than that they’re cheesy and the electronic fake horns that they use in lots of their songs sound terrible and all their songs sound exactly the same. If goth kids just stuck with Joy Division and Nick Cave and Skinny Puppy, they wouldn’t get the bad rap that they usually get. Bands like My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult are what give goth a bad name. Also, I feel like the ‘I’m misunderstood and I do drugs and I write songs about doing drugs and if you want to be goth you have to do drugs like me even though it doesn’t seem to make my life any better.’ shtick is about as positive in its results as any logical thinker might suppose.
