MRR Free Box Review #19: Sniffing Glue – I’m Not Alright

Photobucket

So I was really hoping to have all the compact discs that I got from the MRR free box reviewed by the end of Novemeber, and I’m pretty bummed that I wasn’t able to accomplish that. I’m planning on making some big changes around Ve. Since the website isn’t making me any money or anything, it tends to go on the back burner. Oh well. Time to get to work.

Sniffing Glue hails from Germany. Other than that, I don’t really know anything about the band. I can tell you that their album is totally great though. It brings back imagery and concepts intrinsic to early hardcore punk in ways that I didn’t previously think were possible. I say that because I’m Not Alright is an exciting record. It’s got a sound that feels enthusiastic about doing hardcore, in a time when most bands that tout an early hardcore ethos seem to be doing it simply because that’s what they’ve been doing. This band is not in a rut. This band is very, very obviously influenced by Black Flag and Minor Threat, and it’s awesome. Seriously, I’m enjoying the heck out of it. I think what we have to learn about punk, and music in general, from I’m Not Alright, is that it’s more important to treat creating music as an active, exciting adventure, as opposed to a means to an end. I totally dig it.
