The Downer Party

In case you were curious, I’m not a fan of the new Myspace format. I’ll still link to songs on there that I like, but seriously, social networking should have less whistles and bells and more not doing stuff like making you sign in after you’ve already signed in (and yes, I have cookies turned on. I’m not that computer illiterate.)

As for the band that I intended to talk about when I started this post: The Downer Party remind me of a really obnoxious housecat, that goes to the bathroom all over the house, and claws furniture, and claws people, and leaves dead animals in places where you’ll find them months after the fact and have to clean it up, but at the end of the day, the cat is cute and fluffy and you can’t not love it.

The Downer Party is like that. Their music is so cute that it’s obnoxious. Their brand of indie rock feels very done to death. The way their female lead constantly upstages other members in the media leaves a bad taste in my mouth (granted, that’s not really the band’s fault), and they have that sort of hipster vibe, like maybe a lot of their fans like them because they’re cool to like and not because they actually like them (again, not the band’s fault). I guess at the end of the day, I feel like I’m being a bad person for liking them.

But, like the aforementioned cat, I think they’re great. They’re catchy and nice and fun and polite. There’s not really anything wrong with this band. Really. I like them and I don’t care who knows it.

I just ask one thing: If you have a cute girl in your band, please do not overstress that as a selling point.
