MRR Free Box Review #15: Spawn Atomic – The Retro Future

I like this music. It’s good and solid. But it could be a lot better. I can’t put my finger on it exactly, but something about this band seems like it just needs a finishing touch. Maybe it’s because horror/sci-fi punk has such a wild and exuberant history, that to be a welcome example of the genre, one has to go more eccentric than being simply a good, solid band. No, that’s not it. I’ve never seen Spawn Atomic live, and in fact I’ve never seen a picture of the band at all. I don’t know if they dress in funny costumes or anything like that. Also, the cover art certainly suggests that they take their thematically nature to it’s most extreme end. The cover art is badass.

I guess the reason I can’t sink my teath into it is because it’s more rough and in-your-face than it is sing-songy. I think what makes horror punk so much fun is it often captures that sing along nature that some rock n’ roll has always done. I don’t feel like Spawn Atomic carries the message of ‘Hey, we’re having a ghoulish good time. Come join us!’ I’m sure that they heartily endorse that message, but for some reason, it doesn’t completely come through in the music. I like it, but I don’t totally love this band. Yet….
