MRR Free Box Review #14: The Berzerks – s/t

Photobucket

First off, it’s obnoxiously easy to compare this band to Devo, so let’s just get that out of the way. The Berzerks are clearly inspired (somewhere down the line) by Devo and they sound a little like Devo. Also, Man Or Astroman?.

But beyond all that, this is a terrific little band we’ve got goin’ on here. Their music is rugged yet uplifting, and riffy in a way that’s easy to fall in love with. I imagine that if The Berzerks played a show in a town where they’d never been before, and a bunch of kids showed up just to see a band they’ve never heard of before, every-single-last-one-of-them would be on the floor before the first song was over. It’s got a fast-paced, punk vibe that keeps delivering throughout the whole demo, and maintains and Devo-era electronic undertone that keeps everything sort of friendly and lovable.

The only bad thing I can say about this demo is that the recording quality isn’t the best. If you’ve seen some of my other posts, you know that I typically don’t feel negatively about that factor, and often find it endearing, but for this demo, it seems like it would be more enjoyable if everything sounded crystal clear. But what the heck? Some bands can’t afford fancy recordings. I’m not trippin’.

the berzerks – run you over
the berzerks – psycho bitch from hell!
