Squarepusher – Big Loada

So yesterday in the mail I got my copy of Squarepusher’s Big Loada. The album came out in 1997 and I’m almost mad at myself for not getting into it sooner. (Then again I only got into the electronic music after the 90′s).

The breakcore/electronica genre has never really caught on in America. It seems that Europe has embraced electronic music more. In ’97 hits like Aqua’s Barbie Girl and Prodigy’s Breathe certainly came to America but their reception was almost treated like a joke. But then again all music in 1997 was a joke. According to this site hits from Marcy Playground, Smash Mouth, Third Eye Blind and Mighty Mighty Bosstones raided the airwaves.

Really? God damn what a shitty time for music. I apologize for being somewhat dated here but ’97 should have been MY year, being 18 and a senior in high school.

The 90′s needs to apologize to me! They need to come to me and say “‘Come on my selector’ is awesome. If you had this in 97 instead of ‘Sex and Candy’ I’m sure your year would have been slightly better.”

Sometime last year my cousin sent me ‘Feed Me Weird Things’ as he accidentally ordered two copies. The bass hooks and electronic drum sequences are so well put together I was hooked instantly. They’re danceable, experimental, entertaining. It’s good to know that something new can still be good and presented to friends. I just found out that album was released in 1996!  Here I was thinking it had come out within the last few years.

These albums were definitely ahead of their time and now am I seeing Square’s influence in more modern electronic music.
