MRR Free Box Review #7: John Walsh – Home

While I was listening to this record the first time, I decided that there should be two rules to punk rock.

  1. There are no rules in punk rock.
  2. I like short songs.

The second rule is, of course, a like from a Dead Kennedys song, but it’s also a great concept. I saw an interview with the guy from The Velvet Monkeys where he said he loved how short punk songs were, because that way, if you didn’t like the song a band was playing, there was a new one right around the corner.

Fortunately, I love each and every song on Home, the CD-R release by Ohio’s John Walsh (I’m pretty sure John Walsh is the name of the band and not a single person. Y’know, like Jethro Tull). The longest song on the album is 33 seconds, however, each song on the record is tight and perfect. Some might assume songs so short in length reflected uninspired songwriting and production, but this isn’t the case for John Walsh. Their music has an upbeat, youth crew vibe (I’m reminded a lot of Comeback Kid mixed with Descendents.) that stays exciting throughout the whole album. In conclusion, this band is everything a punk band should be. They obey both rules.
