MRR Free Box Review #2: Run At The Dog – Scutigera, Yeah!

Photobucket

You know what I love about this album? A lot. When I first put it on, I assumed it was going to be a mediocre Celtic music outfit. I think this was mostly judging from the picture of the band in the liner notes. It’s a lot like this other picture of the band.

Imagine my surprise when this beautifully hideous, inexplicable sound hit my ears. Run At The Dog throws together beatboxing, vocal harmonies, driving beats, choppy riffs, and anything else into a giant mixing bowl, and turns out a sound that’s fittingly odd. Their sound takes me back to a time when a number of really great bands (Stump, Mr. Bungle, Primus, Ween, Boredoms, eX-Girl, Soul Coughing, and so many more) used the exploding popularity of the grunge and alternative scene to successfully produce and distribute music with the intent of not sounding right. If I wasn’t listening to Scutigera, Yeah! as I write this, I might have thought that this style of weird music had passed into obscurity. Thank goodness somebody still takes the time to make music like this, and in keeping with their predecessors (contemporaries? I wonder how long this band’s been around), I imagine Run At The Dog is a thrill to see live.

Also, a scutigera is a really, really disgusting kind of centapede that has these long squirmy legs and I did not enjoy seeing pictures of it when I looked up the word on google. I’m gagging a little bit as I write this.

I also should note, that I really like imagining how the prudes over at Maximumrocknroll handled listening to this.
