MRR Free Box Review #12: White Flag Down – Malcontent Killing Machine

Oh dear.

When Roger Ebert reviewed the shitty Alien ripoff Xtro in 1983, he said ‘Why was this movie made? What vision filled the filmmakers with a desire to share this work with an audience?… Most exploitation movies are bad, but not necessarily painful to watch. They may be incompetent, they may be predictable, they may be badly acted or awkwardly directed, but at some level the filmmakers are enjoying themselves and at least trying to entertain an audience. “Xtro” is an exception, a completely depressing, nihilistic film, an exercise in sadness.

Similarly, I have no ability to gauge or understand why Malcontent Killing Machine was created. It seems to be a barely enthusiastic, insincere regurgitation of unmitigated tommyrot. It’s pointless. It contributes nothing engaging or original to the sphere of punk rock. It’s a transparent rehashing of tired cliches and empty rhetoric. The concept of punk that’s on this record seems to be inspired more by the punk characters in movies than any real life human characteristics. The album even starts out with a sample from Clockwork Orange. This is the kind of punk that flips off a cop, but has no motive outside of a basic, snotty attitude. Boo!

I blame Los Angeles. The whole area is so fake and superficial that even musical/lifestyle movements that were created to combat the falseness and superficiality of the world get swept up in the bullshit. As a fan of music, I see no reason why the whole town shouldn’t be destroyed.
