This man…
The career of Little Brother Montgomery is nothing short of amazing. He began playing publically at age 11, and played at various odd venues (such as lumber and turpentine camps) in The South, until he moved to Chicago, for the second time, in 1942. In about the fifties, he became recognized by white audiences and developed a huge following by people who saw him as a living legend. He was able to create his own record label, and tour all over the world. His stern yet wobbly voice is a very distinctive one in the blues world, and his largely self-taught style of playing is equally unique. Here’s a video of him playing Pinetop’s Boogie Woogie, which was of course written by Clarence ‘Pinetop’ Smith, and a video of him playing his own, much more downbeat, Vicksburg Blues.
