Samantha Newark

Don’t you hate it when you really really want something to be good and it just isn’t?

Samantha Newark’s claim to fame is that she was the speaking (not singing) voice of Jem in the 1980′s cartoon Jem & The Holograms. In 2008 she put out an album of her music.

You know who’s a total Jemboy? Me. I think Jem & The Holograms was a totally wicked badass show and if I wasn’t trying to convince myself I was being productive by doing something (posting on Ve) I’d probably sit down and watch some Jem right now. To that end, I really wanted Newark’s album to just be totally wicked awesome inspiring unicorn jams. However, Jemboy is just not that great of a song. The lyrics aren’t clever and don’t suggest a lot of time and energy went into them, and the music itself just does nothing for me. It’s sort of uninspired middle-of-the-road dancy electropop. Again, it hurts me to have to say this, because if there’s anyone who wanted the voice of Jem to rock his world, it’s me. And Samantha Newark seems like she’s a little self absorbed, but ultimately a pretty nice person.

At any rate, if you enjoy her music better than I did, her website is here, and remember to stay totally outrageous.
