Sleepyhead – Sleepyhead Demo

Photobucket

Sleepyhead was a progressive, ambient, smart rock project from Chico, CA. The band sort of amorphously shaped itself from post-rock kids fooling around with a ton of expensive equipment. The band was commonly compared to Kinski, and made a name for themselves as a thought provoking alternative to Chico’s devil-may-care punk scene. Sleepyhead found their share of turmoil during their time in Chico. The band had a hard time finding, and keeping, drummers. Also, as a band and as people, Sleepyhead was too young for their own good. During one practice session, members wantonly smashed the wind-sheilds of cars in a nearby junkyard, not knowing that the windows still had value. Furthermore, the group found difficulty attaching an iconography to their name, seeing as ‘Sleepyhead’ is actually a pretty common band name. Everything finally came to a halt when guitarist Paul Rhoney moved to Portland with his then girlfriend. The band’s plan was to regroup in Portland after every member found an opportunity to move there. I’m not holding my breath. Rhoney now owns his own guitar construction business. Guitarist Matt Houar and bassist Steve Spirk started another prog rock act named Team Shark Week. As for Sleepyhead’s long line of drummers, if any of them are doing anything musical these days, I am unaware of it.
