For a long time I hated pop R&B. I just couldn’t even conceive of why anyone would want to listen to it. Then one day, I said, ‘Okay Chuck, if you really want to take into account this style of music, you’re going to have to do the research to understand the style’s place within the tradition of music.’ This is how I think. At any rate, it sort of worked. There’s a few Rihanna songs that I like, and some other signers are pretty good. I’m drawing a blank on names right now.
At any rate. I saw this about a week ago, and it makes me less inclined to have any interest in pop R&B, and by that, I mean it’s the musical version of watching a third trimester abortion while you’re eating pudding.
This whole over-correction with an auto-tune really has to stop. It doesn’t sound cool at all. Furthermore, he’s writing a Goddamned song about sexting. It’s like that jackass cute boy who says stupid shit all the time, and when you call him on his shit, saying ‘Dude, that’s not what an equinox is. You’re thinking of aurora borealis.’ he just laughs it off, because he’s too cute to ever have his feet held to the fire. That analogy is probably really vague and unclear, but what I’m trying to say is this, Jason Derülo is getting money for something that is really not worth listening to. Still, I don’t hate the player, I hate the game. That’s what I’m trying to say, really. We as music aficionados need to create a world where you can’t write a song about sexting with over-corrected auto-tune vocals and and expect anyone to care. Or maybe I’m over-reacting. At any rate: over-correction with auto-tune, you should have died after Cher.
