Friendship

DAF is a German electropunk group that has been around since the late 70s. I won’t pretend to be an expert or anything on ‘em, and I only have one album of many that they’ve released, “Alles Ist Gut” (“Everything is Fine”), but boy is it a corker. Think Suicide with a live drummer and a serious homoerotic streak. Pulsing, minimalist synth lines, a drummer who kicks ass but is not too showy, and a panting, whispering, crooning and yelping lead singer all add up to a record that is perfect for a night of sodomy. Plus, the album cover is hott. An essential purchase for aspiring goths.

Like so many bands they seem to have a weird fascination with totalitarianism and all of its oh-so-repulsive-yet-fascinating trappings. Their full name, Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft, translates to “German-American Friendship,” but according to Wikipedia may be a play on abbreviations for a couple of different groups, including a Nazi trade union and an organization promoting German and Soviet cooperation during the Cold War. Apparently their earlier material featured a full band but soon they pared their sound down to a very primal synth-drums-vocals lineup that proved to be very popular at the time in their home country. They put out a couple of albums with this configuration and then split up only to reform years later and they’re still going. Check it out!

This really hippy German foreign exchange student that I knew for a while was into these guys. By 'hippy' I mean she had very outspoken hips, that were both odd looking and attractive. Her hips made me want to have sex with her.
